Since January 2005, Music From Other Minds has presented new and unusual music by innovative composers and performers from around the world. Produced weekly for KALW 91.7 FM San Francisco by Charles Amirkhanian and the Other Minds staff, and aired at 8pm every Sunday, Music From Other Minds aims to open up radio listeners to experimental classical work by living and recent composers. We bring you the latest in contemporary music from around the world, and some glimpses into the past, to give a context for today’s music.

Program 551: Ivan Wyschnegradsky

On this Music From Other Minds, in anticipation of Other Minds’ 24th annual festival, Liam Herb explores the music of Ivan Wyschegradsky. Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, but living most of his life in Paris, Ivan Wyschnegradsky (1893-1979) is the most outstanding proponent of microtonal music of his era.

Program 550: Speech Music

Liam Herb hosts program 550 of Music From Other Minds. The subject this week is “speech music,” music from modern American composers that embrace speech and dialect in all its forms, not just the stylized language of opera and on the concert stage. Music from Harry Partch, Robert Ashley, Kyle Gann, and Scott Johnson.

Program 549: Music of the Spheres

On this Music From Other Minds, Randall Wong explores the music of outer space. The program features the work of the little known, visionary Danish composer Rued Langgaard (1893-1953) and “space age bachelor pad music” composer Russell Garcia.

Program 548: Meditations on Divinity and Loss

On this Music From Other Minds, Liam Herb presents a program dedicated to works about subject matter beyond the corporal realm. The show features two long works by composers Alden Jenks and Ingram Marshall and a very short (unrelated) work by the miniaturist composer Marc Mellits.

Program 547: Cinematic Music

On this Music From Other Minds, Mark Abramson explores cinematic works by John Cage and John Zorn. The program features John Cage and Kenneth Patchen’s 1942 radio play The City Wears a Slouch Hat and John Zorn’s file card composition Spillane.

Program 546: Long Forms

On this Music From Other Minds, Andrew Weathers plays long form pieces by David Rosenbloom, Panaiotis, and Tom Hamilton. The program includes David Rosenboom’s work Portable Gold and Philosophers’ Stones, Panaiotis’ Awakening, and an excerpt of Tom Hamilton’s City of Vorticicity.

Program 545: Not Socialist Realism

On this Music From Other Minds, Randall Wong explores the music of Dmitri Shostakovich, in anticipation of our program  of his arrangements for two pianos, presented by Maki Namekawa and Dennis Russell Davies.

Program 544: Fun with Music

In the spirit of bringing in the new year with a laugh, Mark Abramson has some fun with music. This Music From Other Minds program features works where composers and performers practice the “art of the musical gag.” This program originally aired the Friday before January 1, 2019.

Program 543: Krazy 4 Krampus

On this Music From Other Minds, Randall Wong Delivers an unorthodox Holiday-Mix. The program is composed of two works by San Francisco’s own unclassifiable band, the Residents, Charles Céleste Hutchins‘ holiday masterwork Christmawave, and David Lang’s tragic work The Little Match Girl Passion.

On this Music From Other Minds: Planes, Trains, And Machineries. The program includes works of Alexandr Mosolov, Mikhail Matiushin, George Antheil, Julius Meytuss, Arthur Honegger, and Arseny Abraamov celebrating the modern industrial age of the 1920s and 30s.
