Joseph Bohigian to become our new Artistic Director in January 2027!

Other Minds announces today that Joseph Bohigian, current Associate Director of Other Minds, will become its new Artistic Director in January of 2027. Having worked at, and worked-his-way-up at, Other Minds for over four years, Bohigian's coming tenure as Artistic Director will combine the lively and historically grounded artistic imagination that marks his own compositional output with a foundation in the institutional practices that have made Other Minds such a success over the past 33 years.

You'll be able to see him perform at this year's Other Minds Festival 30, which opens with his work I Am He Whose Life and Soul Are Torment, an evening-length multimedia work about the life of the visionary Soviet-Armenian film director Sergei Parajanov (1924–1990) that combines the multilingual songs of the 18th century bard Sayat Nova in Armenian, Azeri, and Georgian with live electronic manipulation of recordings by South Caucasus folk musicians.

Listen to Joseph Bohigian interview @ted_gordon on the most recent Other Minds Podcast!

Theodore Gordon is a musicologist and musician whose work connects experimental music, critical organology, and science and technology studies. He has performed with viola and Buchla instruments at venues including Elastic Arts, Experimental Sound Studio, and Roulette. Gordon is Assistant Professor of Music at Baruch College, and serves on the Doctoral Faculty at the CUNY Graduate Center. His first book, The Composer’s Black Box: Making Music in Cybernetic America, published in December 2025, shows how scientific concepts and technologies borrowed from cybernetics, information theory, and systems-thinking became catalysts for new musical organizations in the 1960s. This interview, like the book, focuses on these concepts through the work of Morton Subotnick, Donald Buchla, Pauline Oliveros, Sun Ra, and Alvin Lucier.

📻 Last Night on Music from Other Minds: Surreal Samsara! 📻

Host Devin King played two works that engage with the intense reality of the dream-world as well as the Buddhist idea that the material world follows a cycle of birth and rebirth. For the first hour of the program, he played selections from the 2007 opera Wagner Dream, by British composer Jonathan Harvey. Wagner Dream is a reimagining of the last day of Wagner’s life; Harvey envisions the work that Wagner died attempting—an opera based on the life of the Buddha—as a long dream or vision that Wagner has as he moves toward death. Then, for the second hour, King played guitarist Henry Kaiser’s 45-minute solo that forms part of Bill Laswell’s 2026 project Mt. Analogue, based on René Daumel’s posthumously-published 1952 surrealist novel, Mount Analogue: A Novel of Symbolically Authentic Non-Euclidean Adventures in Mountain Climbing.

OTHER MINDS ANNOUNCES SEARCH FOR NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR: Desired Start Date January 1, 2027

Other Minds announces a search today for a new Executive Director. The Executive Director (ED) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for executing OM’s mission and purpose, while administering its staff and ensuring that it is financially sustainable through fundraising and grant awards and opportunities. The ED will establish clear metrics to evaluate OM’s programs and operations, and ensure that results are communicated effectively to OM’s Board of Directors, funders, and the broader community. The ED will bring a balance of artistic literacy, nonprofit management, financial acumen, and genuine enthusiasm for working in partnership with staff, board, artists, local organizations, and donors.

Tonight! Stephen Siek plays Alexander Reinagle: Monday, July 20, at 7:30 PM at Littlefield Concert Hall at Mills College.

Alexander Reinagle was born in Edinburgh and emigrated to America in 1786. He soon established himself as Philadelphia’s most renowned musician, and after George Washington heard him at the Constitutional Convention in 1787, Washington engaged him to give piano lessons to Martha’s granddaughter, Nelly Custis. Nelly was ten when she began her instruction in 1789, and within a few years, Reinagle had completed several large Sonatas for the piano which are today known as the Philadelphia Sonatas. Although they were not published till long after his death, he performed them frequently at public concerts, and today they are regarded as the most significant keyboard music composed in Early America.

Presenting Reinagle’s work on both piano, as well as the more historically appropriate fortepiano, will be Stephen Siek, whose recording of the Philadelphia Sonatas remains the gold standard. Siek will also present commentary on the work as well as a lecture with projections illustrating the life and work of the composer.

Big news from Other Minds: Co-founder and Executiv

Big news from Other Minds: Co-founder and Executive and Artistic Director Charles Amirkhanian will transition to the role of Director Emeritus on January 1, 2027. For 34 years, Amirkhanian has embodied the spirit of the American Maverick Composer through indefatigable work in service of music, musicians, and, perhaps most importantly, their audiences. Since the first OM Festival in 1993, he has grown the organization to include a record label, a weekly radio program, and an online archive with over 10,000 hours of free music and interviews. Last night on Music From Other Minds on KALW 91.7 Bay Area, Other Minds Executive and Artistic Director Charles Amirkhanian took us on a quixotic journey through a selection of rarely-heard pieces composed in the USA dating back nearly to the First Constitutional Convention of 1787. Featured Composers includes Stephen Foster, Charles Ives, Daniel Gregory Mason, Ernst Krenek, Ned Rorem and George Antheil. Also included are the piano sonatas of Alexander Reinagle, who will be featured on the Mavericks 250 concert series at Mills College in Oakland on July 20, 2026.

Pianist Stephen Siek served as a professor of music at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, where he taught piano, music history, American music, the aesthetics of music, and film music. He is currently Director of the Emeritus College Academy for Continued Learning at Arizona State University. He has performed and lectured at piano conferences for organizations such as the Historical Keyboard Society of America and the American Liszt Society. Siek is a specialist in the keyboard music of the Federalist Era American composer Alexander Reinagle. Reinagle was born in Edinburgh and immigrated to America in 1786, first briefly to New York before settling in Philadelphia and later Baltimore, where he died in 1809. He quickly became an important figure in the musical life of Philadelphia, where he performed at the 1787 Constitutional Convention and attracted the attention of George Washington. Siek will visit the Bay Area to perform the music of this little-known early American on Monday, July 20, 2026, the 240th anniversary of Reinagle’s first performance in the United States, at Littlefield Concert Hall at Mills College at Northeastern University in Oakland. Siek joins the podcast to talk about the life and work of this underrecognized American composer.

Pianist Stephen Siek—who will be performing at the event—writes, "But despite the impressive musical accomplishments of the Founding Fathers, the pursuit of music as a livelihood in Early America was invariably left to immigrants born and trained abroad, and among this group, Alexander Reinagle was arguably the most accomplished pianist in the New World. After he settled in Philadelphia in the fall of 1786, his professional ascendancy was rapid, and the following year, George Washington even heard him perform at the Constitutional Convention."

Tierceron, the first collaborative release between

Tierceron, the first collaborative release between @sensodivoce Senso di Voce (Esin Gunduz, voice, harmonium, composer, and Megan Kyle, oboe, English horn) and multi-instrumentalist @henry___birdsey.

The seven movements of Tierceron are improvised, each of the three musicians drawing from starkly different backgrounds. Oboist Megan Kyle’s background in orchestras and new music ensembles intersects with vocalist Esin Gunduz’s experience with Anatolian vocal styles, improvised music, and as a composer. Their long history of working as a duo no doubt contributes to their precision even in free musical contexts. Birdsey is a consistent presence in underground music, known through his extensive work with Tongue Depressor and as a solo artist (including his album Half-Dragged, released on Other Minds Records in 2021). These three disparate contexts blend into a work that is delicately textural and light and at the same time it’s arresting and engaging. Tierceron sits in an unknown territory between free improvisation’s skitters and scrambles and drone’s swirling weight and density.
