Other Minds 23: The History Channel

Stephen Smoliar outlines some of his favorite parts of Wednesday nights concert “The History Channel”. Wednesday’s concert featured pieces that ranged from 1914 to 1966 and featured works by the founder of the futurist movement, Filippo Marinetti, Ernst Toch and Cathy Berberian. There were also remarks by Other Minds co-founder, Executive and Artistic Director, Charles Amirkhanian and Ernst Toch’s grandson Lawrence Weschler. Smoliar was particularly fond of Jaap Blonk’s performance of Kurt Schwitters’ Ursonate and describes his experience by saying, “One could not “settle in” to listening that focused simply on the rich sonorities of the phrases, because one was always in suspense over the physical manifestation of each phrase.”
