Other Minds welcomes pianist Amy Williams @acwcomp Other Minds welcomes pianist Amy Williams @acwcomposer to perform Morton Feldmanโ€™s monumentalโ€”and rarely performedโ€”Triadic Memories on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at Mills College at Northeastern University in Oakland, in celebration of the composerโ€™s centennial. Morton Feldmanโ€™s extraordinary late solo piano work is a study in slowly evolving repetitions over the 80-minute duration. Exact repetitions, subtle variations, shifting patterns and fresh new materials are interwoven. Materials are constantly recontextualized, using different voicing and registers, changing one note of a chord, juxtaposing new harmoniesโ€”always changing and always soft. The listener is taken on a journey of deep concentration and reflection.

Pianist/composer Amy Williams has been connected to Feldmanโ€™s music since her childhoodโ€”her father and Feldman were close colleagues at the University at Buffalo. She has recorded and performed his music for nearly three decades. This concert is part of Other Mindsโ€™s PastForward series, presented in cooperation with the Center for Contemporary Music, Northeastern University and Mills Performing Arts.

Happy Boxing Day! Enjoy this Other Minds Archive Happy Boxing Day!

Enjoy this Other Minds Archive Find: 9 minutes of sawtooth experimentation on the "Payne Box" from the late '60s. This is an early example of the types of sounds that can be created electronically. It is uncertain if this modulated sawtooth wave was intended as a piece of electronic music or simply as a demonstration of a certain type of analog synthesizer. The accompanying documentation indicates it was one channel of a โ€œPayne Box,โ€ which may indicate that it was created by either Maggi Payne or John Payne, both composers of electronic music associated with KPFA during the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Late-Soviet Composers! On this rebroadcast of an earlier Music from Other Minds, Joseph Bohigian presented a program of music by composers from the former Soviet Union from the mid 1970s to early 1990s that looks outward, away from the countryโ€™s administrative center, engaging with influences at the edges of the Soviet East and South, or looking toward Western Europe. Including works by Sofia Gubaidulina, Alfred Schnittke, Edison Denisov, Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky, Astraea, and Valentin Silvestrov.

@pmargasak writes on Bandcamp that @putu_septa 's @pmargasak writes on Bandcamp that @putu_septa 's Piwal is one of The Best Contemporary Classical Music of 2025!

"Septa recognizes vast potential for the gamelan, evoking the most abstract swells and tones of experimental electronic music and classic minimalism (although neither is really deployed here). Thereโ€™s a clear fluency in traditional gamelan music, so when Septa subverts that tradition, itโ€™s with a mix of respect and love. That deep understanding seems to allow him to take all kinds of chances. Few things Iโ€™ve heard this year have been more transportive."

๐Ÿฆƒ ๐ŸŽถ "Turkey Song" ๐ŸŽถ ๐Ÿฆƒ Looking for something to li ๐Ÿฆƒ ๐ŸŽถ "Turkey Song" ๐ŸŽถ ๐Ÿฆƒ

Looking for something to listen to while you're cooking today? โ€œTurkey Songโ€ is a form of inter-species music; a joint communication between three human beings and three hundred tom (male) turkeys. The producer of this piece, Jim Nollman, has experimented with musical communication with various animals for many years. But of all the animals, the most obviously receptive creature to audio stimulus is the turkey. Turkeys respond with a precise rhythmic gobble to any pitch above a certain register. The pitch is relative and is dependent upon the environmental noise already present. It thus becomes possible to devise extremely precise melodic and rhythmic patterns, and by accenting one note of the pattern by its loudness of pitch the turkey will always respond in time.
