Abstract electronic music from renowned field recordist, animal communicator, and researcher Jim Nollman joins the Other Minds Records roster with his Music for Swimming and Flying.
Drawing from the influence of electronic artists like Squarepusher, Nollman has assembled an album of beat-based manipulated animal sound pieces that wouldn’t be out of place on the Warp Records roster. It’s as if Brian Eno and David Byrne’s My Life in the Bush of Ghosts drew from natural sounds rather than “thrifted” answering machine tapes and shortwave preachers. The rhythmic and repetitive nature of the material draws out the inherent musicality of animal calls that Nollman has pointed at throughout his career.
The pieces on Music for Swimming and Flying were drawn from material collected during the course of the artist’s scientific work and fitted to the narratives and experiences explored within.
