Program 698: Avant-Garde Exotica
KALW Broadcast Date: May 29, 2022 | Host: Ed Herrmann
On June 6 the Norwegian composer Øyvind Torvund visits the Bay Area as the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players perform The Exotica Album, Torvund’s sophisticated parody/tribute combining elements of “exotic lounge music” from the 1950s with early electronic modernism. In anticipation of this momentous event Ed Herrmann presents music by Øyvind Torvund along with highlights from the exotica pioneers that inspired him, including Les Baxter and Martin Denny. In addition to excerpts from The Exotica Album, performed by BIT20 Ensemble, we’ll hear Torvund’s untitled school performed by Yarn/Wire; and a live recording from the 2012 Other Minds Festival of Torvund’s Neon Forest Space, played by the Norwegian ensemble asamisimasa. The program also includes Hans Reichel playing his daxophone, Bart Hopkin playing exotic instruments of his own invention, the Ensemble Modern playing Mauricio Kagel’s version of exotica, and selections by Tom Djll, Spike Jones, Korla Pandit, and Edvard Grieg.
