A Radio Milestone

 In Music From Other Minds
“Music from Other Minds” Marks its 500th Broadcast.

Other Minds, the Bay Area non-profit celebrating its 25th year of support for composers of pathbreaking music, marks a milestone this week with its 500th radio program on San Francisco’s KALW-FM. Founding host Richard Friedman will pop all available corks with blockbuster works for large ensembles by Edgar Varèse (photo above), Iannis Xenakis, and Luciano Berio on Friday night, January 26, 2018, at 11:00pm. “I figured we needed a program with some really big sound to clear the electromagnetic spectrum for a new year of music,” says Friedman.

This long-running weekly series also streams at otherminds.org/mfom, as do most of the previous broadcasts in the series, focusing in general on new releases or off-beat historical subjects. “Music from Other Minds” was inaugurated in January 2005 by Friedman, and he will be joined by other OM staff and volunteers, including Charles Amirkhanian and Randall Wong, in hosting the broadcasts in the months ahead.

In addition to the 500 programs in this series, Other Minds maintains www.radiOM.org, hosting 2000 contemporary music programs originally produced for KPFA Radio (1949-1995).
