Since January 2005, Music From Other Minds has presented new and unusual music by innovative composers and performers from around the world. Produced weekly for KALW 91.7 FM San Francisco by Charles Amirkhanian and the Other Minds staff, and aired at 8pm every Sunday, Music From Other Minds aims to open up radio listeners to experimental classical work by living and recent composers. We bring you the latest in contemporary music from around the world, and some glimpses into the past, to give a context for today’s music.

Program 561: Salonen and Takemitsu

On this Music From Other Minds, Liam Herb plays the world premiere recording of Esa-Pekka Salonen‘s Cello Concerto, performed by Yo Yo Ma and the LA Philharmonic, and Tōru Takemitsu‘s A String Around Autumn.

Program 560: Wind Works

On this Music From Other Minds, Liam Herb explores works for wind instruments by Henry Cowell, Ruth Crawford, Alois Hába, and Hanna Kulenty. This program includes an unreleased live recording of Kulenty’s masterful Trumpet Concerto No. 1.

Program 559: Anti-Opera

On this Music From Other Minds, Randall Wong presents Morton Feldman‘s “anti-opera” Neither. Also on this program, Christian Wolff in Cambridge, a short work for 1963 for a capella choir. In this work the pitches are clearly defined, but the note length is indeterminate.

On this Music From Other Minds, Liam Herb explores three very different approaches to vocal music. Tune in to hear works by Maurice Ohana, Milton Babbitt, and Johanna Beyer.

Program 557: Archiving the Avant-garde

On the next Music From Other Minds, Liam Herb explores a decade (1964-1974) of boundary pushing music. The program will feature works by Robert Ashley, Alvin Curran, Annea Lockwood, Alvin Lucier, Gordon Mumma, and a few surprise guests. Tune in for an overview of a very important decade in avant-garde music.

Program 556: Jazz on the Edge

On this Music from Other Minds, a program dedicated to the experimental spirit of jazz now and in the past. The program celebrates the new innovations happening in jazz today, as well as the experimental jazz artists that paved the way for this younger generation of composers and performers.

Program 555: Other Minds Shuffle

On this Music from Other Minds, Liam Herb presents the first ever Other Minds Shuffle! Tune in to hear some a curated assortment of gems from the odd and extensive Other Minds Records catalogue.

Program 554: De Staat and Other Selections

On this Music From Other Minds, Liam Herb explores the music of three very different composers. The program features the work of Japanese composer and koto player Michiyo Yagi, De Staat but Dutch composer Louis Andriessen, and Alaskan composer Matthew Burtner‘s Sonic Physiography of a Time-stretched Glacier.

Program 553: 20th and 21st Century Music for Celesta

On the next Music From Other Minds, Randall Wong plays works for solo celesta by Josef Matthais Hauer, Jan Dušek, and Michael Jon Fink. (The music on this program is mostly very soft so it may be necessary to adjust your volume accordingly.)
