Being Beauteous by Hans Werner Henze (born Gütersloh, Germany, 1926-2012) dates from 1963. Henze’s compositional roots lay with the post war serialist generation but as he matured as composer, so did additional styles and idioms become incorporated in his work. Being Beauteous, is composed to a prose poem by Arthur Rimbaud from his collection Les Illuminations (1886). We will hear Edda Moser accompanied by the Berlin Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra with Henze conducting.

Next we will hear let me tell you by Hans Abrahamsen. Abrahamsen was born in Copenhagen in 1952 and composed let me tell you on commission from the Berlin Philharmonic. It was premiered on December 20, 2013 by the Berlin Philharmonic with Barbara Hannigan as the soloist. It is based on of the novella let me tell you by the British novelist Paul Griffiths and follows the story of tragic story of Ophelia in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. We will hear the 2016 recording of Barbara Hannigan with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra with Andris Nelsons conducting.
