Other Minds crosses the southern border to spotlight work from Mexican experimental music and sound art. We’ll hear from the Tecuexe band, whose work is based around a combination of modern electronics and traditional Mexican acoustic instruments. Mexico City-based multi-media artist Juanjosé Rivas’s work communicates through translation, error and interference within the different audio and visual artistic languages. Rogelio Sosa, also from Mexico City, is an experimental musician and sound artist whose work uses a wide range of sound sources, electronic media and kinetic devices. Guadalajara’s Israel Martinez is another sound artist who uses field recordings in combination with electronic sound manipulation and in combination with other media like video, photography, text and “interventions in public spaces.” And the science/art collective Interspecifics create soundscapes using electrical impulses from various forms of non-human life, and also from combinations of low and high-tech human inventions. We’ll be listening specifically to some of their musical/sound creations made with micro organisms, including cyanobacteria and slime mold.
