Amy X Neuburg was born in Cheltenham, England. She trained as a classical vocalist at Oberlin College and went on to study electronic music at the Mills College Center for Contemporary Music. There she composed and performed with Pauline Oliveros, David Rosenboom, and Chris Brown, and studied percussion with William Winant. As a vocalist she has toured throughout Europe, Japan, and the U.S. with Robert Ashley's contemporary opera ensemble (and sang on the Nonesuch recording of Ashley's Improvement) and performed a long-running show with Culture Clash at the South Coast and Berkeley Repertory Theaters. She was a core member of the experimental musical theatre ensemble MAP, spent nine years performing with her electronic avant-cabaret band Amy X Neuburg & Men, and has worked with fellow techno-vocalists Emily Bezar and Pamela Z, among others. Amy has also established herself as a composer for modern dance (most notably AXIS Dance Company) as well as for film, video, installations, theatre, and web media. Composition highlights include several full-evening scores for AXIS, and music for Mondomedia's "Piki & Poko in Starland" animated web series. Recently she has turned her focus towards her solo works for voice, electronics and percussion, and in 2002 presented "Songs About Life & Death & Love & Insects"—a theatrical multimedia "one-woman techno-circus"—at the EXIT Theatre in San Francisco. She has three CDs on the Racer Records label. Awards and honors include Phi Beta Kappa, Pi Kappa Lambda, Oberlin Conservatory Honors, and the Wieland Prize for Vocal Excellence. |
