In December 2000, Radio Station KPFA in Berkeley, CA, transferred ownership of its Music Department Archive of audiotapes, along with selected rare LPs and a number of general music reference books, to Other Minds. The collection, which includes recordings on analog and digital audiotape of inter-views, music, concerts and documentaries on contemporary and classical music, recorded over a period from 1957 to 1992, is one of the few such extant collections in the United States. It represents a unique archive of recorded interviews with some of the most prominent composers to have emerged during that period and therefore is in constant demand by individuals working on dissertations on the composers involved. It also comprises an entertaining and educational body of content for libraries, websites and audiences worldwide, suggesting that its preservation and dissemination is of the utmost importance to the field. Possibilities exist for non-commercial and, in some cases, commercial use of the content. There are 6000 analog reel-to-reel audiotapes, professionally recorded, which constitute the basis of the collection. There are another 200 DAT and Beta format tapes containing complete programs and concert recordings. And there are 325 LP recordings which feature out of print and rare material. There are 50 books in the collection. This valuable archive will be used as an important resource for the forthcoming Other Minds web radio project. |
