BRINK: Other-Minded Music series
presents MUSIC TO RAISE THE DEAD,
featuring Diatric Puds & the Blobettes
and the Crank Ensemble.

Wednesday, August 31, 9:30 pm, at Hemlock Tavern in San Francisco

Diatric Puds & the Blobettes:

Diatric Puds & the Blobettes haunt West Oakland, playing wicked mutant Doo-Wop and gutter town Rhythm 'N' Blues through haunted hi-fi stacks and spinning spider speakers. They're the snazziest dressers with genuine bubbly faces crooning blood soaked lullabies and heart stabbing ballads. One part experimental soundtrack music, two parts phantom garage boggle all heaped with murky ghoul goop and lots of eerie electronics. It's akin to listening to the phantom oldies station beaming in several light years away through the AM dial of the dead. Inspired by 1970s monster cartoons, ghost stories and Three Stooges these kids attempt to extract the haunted qualities from 1950s ballads. Like any young group a majority of the material is pruned from familiar songs of the popular age...the age these ghouls are stuck in just happens to be 50 years ago. Diatric Puds & the Blobettes create musical accompaniment for mutant dinner parties and dusty graveside séances in your Buick 59.

The Crank Ensemble:

There are six hand-cranked instruments and six performers, and one conductor with a mixing  board. Led by sound sculptor Larnie Fox, the ensemble premiered these amazing new instruments at the recent Garden of Memory concert in June at the Chapel of the Chimes Mortuary in Oakland.

Launched on April 27, 2005, BRINK: Other-Minded Music is a monthly concert series providing an intimate setting for performances by local, national, and international musicians and composers, with a focus on music experimentation. Held at Hemlock Tavern’s recently renovated, 100-person capacity performance space near downtown San Francisco, the series reflects Other Minds’ commitment to the world community of composers and sound artists, and presents a new opportunity for developing “other-minded” artists, as well as artists seeking a more intimate forum to congregate and perform their works. Curated by Other Minds Program Director Bernard Francis Kyle and board member David Katznelson, along with guest curators, the series runs the last Wednesday of every month at 9:30 p.m.

ADMISSION
21 and over only. Cover charge: $7.

ABOUT HEMLOCK TAVERN
Hemlock Tavern is located at 1131 Polk Street, between Post and Sutter, one block east of Van Ness Avenue. Hemlock features a newly expanded live music performance room, physically separate from the main bar, which was originally designed by studio recording engineers and underwent a renovation and expansion in January 2005. While retaining much of its beloved intimacy and charm, the room is now a somewhat bigger, and all-around improved, version of itself with a new 16' x 10' stage. The Hemlock Tavern received the 2004 SF Weekly award for "Best Intimate Venue."
